New Rules - 2015 Lowry Ave N.

By Greg SB

New Rules is a collective built on the idea of developing ecosystems & solutions for Black & Brown communities where structures of oppression (economic, health & wellness and education) breed. We take unproductive buildings in overlooked communities and turn them into innovative spaces that are designed by the community to solve problems they have identified for themselves, both personally & professionally.

Last year, we conducted a design thinking workshop to learn more about key issues that attribute to these societal ills within the community, drawing out nearly over 200 people in and outside of Minneapolis. In the results of our event, people shared their need for accessibility, communal workspace, places to be collectively innovative, and gain opportunities to share-skills with like-minded individuals. Our response was to purchase the historic commercial complex located at 2015 North Lowry. Over the course of 18 months, we have invested over 5,000 hours in sweat equity and thousands in personal savings to restore the building to what it is today — New Rules, a new legacy for North Minneapolis.

On October 15th, 2016 New Rules on Lowry opened its doors to the public providing workspace, retail and event space the mission to contribute to the growth of individuals and communities by providing space and holistic resources that expand their creative and professional pursuits.

We are currently seeking feedback on how to best evolve and expand our current model. Our model has been co-developed with community members who proposed adding a New Rules café, soul food restaurant, retail store, makers space and more! Like these ideas or have other ideas for how we can best use the space?? Vote! We want your feedback!! Check out our website - www.newrulesmn.com for more info or search us on all social channels - @newrulesnorth

Our goal at New Rules is to build the capacity of youth, creatives, and their communities to pursue their passions in a sustainable way that creates economic growth in North Minneapolis, so keep that top of mind as you brainstorm amazing ideas!!
